Functionality:Edittools
From MediaWiki extension testing
The Edittools is this box that you may find at the bottom of an edit page with characters that you may enter. There are several implementations of this functionality and there are people that hate it, there are people that love it. It needs some overhaul.
Existing situation
The Edittools are mentioned on the Extension:CharInsert. They refer to the Edittools message and to Edittools.js. The functionality is used on multi-lingual wikis. Edittools allow you to conveniently select characters that are not directly supported on your keyboard.
What to look for in an improved situation
- The Edittools become an extension and, are easy to install.
- The names of languages and scripts are localised.
- Much of this information is available in the CLDR extension
- As many people hate it, it might be a good idea to allow people to disable it
- There is a LONG list of languages supported while in actual fact only the language of the Wiki and the language of the user are relevant.
- For me personally, the list of characters supported in a script is highly important. So it either is configurable to have this or it is always on
I have talked with MinuteElectron about this and he reckons that it is at least one day of work.. He is a programmer.. I think everything considered is more like two days of work.
